Approximately 50 automobiles have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Automobiles, walls and postboxes were vandalized, in some cases with swastikas, they announced in a release.
Police say they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday, when a resident noticed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued substance.
The substance had been placed in the shape of a swastika, they stated.
Officers then discovered multiple other smeared vehicles and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations banning the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Officials say preliminary tests indicate the fluid was probably human blood.
"Currently there is no clue as to its source; officials are not yet aware of any physical harm in relation with the incident," they commented.
City officials said they were working "to unravel the mystery" and have requested to the community for tips.
A high-ranking political figure commented the attack made him speechless and needed to be solved quickly.
"This incident hits the very heart of Hanau and revives the wounds of the far-right violent incident half a decade ago," he posted on online, recalling the killing of nine people by a assailant targeting residents of immigrant origin in February 2020.
