EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.

Other Developments in the News

In related judicial developments:

  • A US district judge has blocked efforts to reduce security grants to local governments that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The official stated the case was “another example” of tying government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of 350 national guard members to New Orleans prior to the new year, alongside an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to take in a limited number of individuals from the US in return for increased assistance, after concluding a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has initiated legal action seeking the stripping of a political figure’s name from a prominent performing arts center in Washington DC.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a wider ideology in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with historical international strategies.
