The fast bowler Poised for a Major Role in the Ashes

Test match action

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches set to start on 21 November in Western Australia.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about his chances of taking part.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and various factors involved, aside from the physical problem, but other factors as well," he commented.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he's going to play a major part. Hopefully starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with recurrences in multiple past seasons leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the contest.

The selector indicated that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the opening match as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games regardless. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for another day, we opted to take a cautious route."
