Nevertheless, physicians and pharmacists have warned that the sale of what remains an unapproved medication in the UK is worrisome and could result in users injecting substances of uncertain source.

Some professionals stated the popularity for the experimental drug could be linked to the rising cost of approved slimming products such as Mounjaro.

Regulatory Status and Implementation

Selling the unapproved drug on social media or messaging apps is prohibited in the UK, as it is an unlicensed drug that must not be marketed or supplied for personal consumption under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Several influencers try to sidestep the regulations by calling to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a restricted drug, but promotion and distribution can still violate medicines, marketing, and customer laws, potentially leading to penalties, legal action or prison.

Service Reaction and Content Elimination

According to TikTok, the platform has taken down problematic material and banned related hashtags and search suggestions. The company said it was committed to maintaining the platform secure and investing in enhancing enforcement strategies.

Digital Trading Activities

Investigations also found groups with up to 9,000 participants selling retatrutide using Telegram's integrated discovery tool, which operates like a online catalog. Entering “retatrutide” immediately brings up channels with numerous of users, populated with photos of slimming results, positive testimonials and detailed instructions for mixing or injecting at home.

After moments of joining one group, a vendor shared WhatsApp details, where the majority of purchases occur. The seller sent an instruction manual and promised delivery within 48 hours. When asked whether the substance was authentic, one seller responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a image of a supposed laboratory certificate. Not one inquired about weight, health issues or past usage.

Item Details and Costs

Inside these communities, messages show dark colored parcels with postal service labels, stating to contain new batches. One message read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Customers can choose between powder vials, mixed at home with sterile water, or ready-to-use pens typically sold at 160 pounds for 20mg. When questioned how much time a injector should be used, sellers give contradictory responses ranging from a few weeks to “depends on your body”.

Platform Moderation and Security Actions

A representative for Telegram said it actively moderated dangerous content on its service including content that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company added that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Medical Expert Cautions

“Individuals are administering materials they cannot confirm. Although the science behind retatrutide is valid, these online products may not include what they claim,” said a pharmacy expert, the head of pharmaceutical services at a pharmacy service.

A medical professional of Asda Online Doctor connected the increase in demand to current price rises for approved weight-loss medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs increasing, patients are turning to online platforms. But counterfeit injections are extremely risky. You cannot know what’s inside or whether the conditions they were made in was clean,” she explained.

Her staff has already seen patients harmed by personal administration from unconfirmed suppliers. “We recognize the disappointment, but purchasing from Telegram or communication platforms is gambling with your health,” said Wyllie. “These materials could be impure or incorrectly dosed.”

Manufacturer Position

A representative from the pharmaceutical company said the substance was in third stage research studies and had not been reviewed or authorized by any government authority globally. “Consequently at this point no one can sell [it] for human use,” they explained, noting that any item “misleadingly claiming itself as a Lilly investigational substance not yet approved … may expose patients to potentially significant health risks”.
