Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Players are granted the right to question specific decisions made by the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol currently in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step arrives only a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.

Practical Application

A recent incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where fans have occasionally been unsure if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
